Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of PageListener, operated by Coiron Ltd (SC504810). By using the service, you agree to these terms.

The service

PageListener converts PDF documents into audio using text-to-speech technology. You upload a PDF, we extract the text, generate audio, and let you listen. You can save documents to your library, resume playback, and share listen links with others.

Accounts

You can use PageListener without an account to upload and listen. Creating a free account lets you save up to 3 documents in your library and resume where you left off. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure. One account per person.

Free and Plus tiers

The free tier includes uploading PDFs, listening to audio, and saving up to 3 documents in your library. PageListener Plus is a paid subscription that offers unlimited library storage and additional features. Plus pricing, features, and terms are displayed at the point of purchase.

Plus subscriptions are billed monthly through Stripe. You can cancel at any time through your account settings. When you cancel, you retain Plus access until the end of your current billing period. After that, your account reverts to the free tier. Your library items beyond the free tier limit will remain in your account but may not be accessible until you re-subscribe.

What you can upload

You may upload PDFs that you have the right to use for personal listening. This includes documents you own, documents shared with you for educational or professional purposes, and publicly available documents. You must not upload documents that contain illegal content, malware, or content you do not have permission to use.

We do not monitor the content of your uploads. You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to use any document you upload.

Sensitive and confidential documents

PageListener is designed for educational, professional, and personal reading material such as textbooks, articles, reports, and lecture notes. It is not designed for sensitive or confidential documents.

You must not upload documents containing financial information (such as bank statements, tax returns, payslips, or investment records), medical or health records, legal privileged material, government-issued identity documents, passwords or security credentials, or any document you would not be comfortable sharing with a third-party cloud service.

Uploaded content is stored in cloud infrastructure, processed by third-party services, and may be accessible via share links. We cannot guarantee the confidentiality of uploaded content and accept no liability for any loss, disclosure, or damage resulting from the upload of sensitive documents.

Third-party personal data

If you upload a document containing personal information about other people — such as names, addresses, financial details, or employment information — you are responsible for ensuring you have the legal right to share that data with a third-party service. This includes having consent from the individuals concerned or another lawful basis under applicable data protection law. We may remove content that we believe contains third-party personal data uploaded without proper authority.

Share links

When you share a listen link, anyone with the link can listen to the audio. You are responsible for who you share links with. Share links are intended for personal sharing. Sharing links to copyrighted content at scale (such as publishing them publicly to distribute copyrighted books) is not permitted.

Acceptable use

You agree not to misuse the service. This includes not attempting to disrupt or overload the service, not creating multiple accounts to circumvent limits, not using automated tools to bulk-upload documents, and not using the service for any illegal purpose.

Prohibited content

You must not upload, generate audio from, or share via PageListener any content that:

• Is sexually explicit, pornographic, or obscene
• Depicts, promotes, or facilitates the sexual exploitation or abuse of minors (CSAM) — we will report any such content to law enforcement
• Promotes or incites violence, terrorism, or physical harm against any person or group
• Contains hate speech — content that attacks, demeans, or incites hatred against individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin
• Is defamatory, libellous, or designed to harass, stalk, or intimidate others
• Contains malware, viruses, or other harmful code
• Infringes intellectual property rights when shared publicly (see Share links section)
• Violates any applicable law or regulation

Content removal and enforcement

We reserve the right to review, remove, or disable access to any content at our sole discretion, without prior notice, if we believe it violates these terms, contains sensitive or confidential information inappropriate for the service, poses a risk to our users, our service, or our brand, or is otherwise unsuitable for a public document-to-audio platform. This includes removing audio, PDFs, share links, and collection links. We may access and review uploaded content and generated audio for the purposes of quality assurance, content moderation, troubleshooting, and improving the service.

If you repeatedly violate these terms, or if a single violation is serious enough, we may immediately suspend or terminate your account without warning. We are not obligated to provide you with a copy of removed content.

The public audio library

PageListener publishes a public audio library: audio editions of works we have the right to make available, produced by us so they can be listened to rather than read. The library draws on two kinds of source material — (1) public-domain literary works, such as classic novels whose copyright has expired; and (2) publicly available institutional documents, such as government reports, regulatory publications, and research papers, including works published under open licences such as the Open Government Licence. You do not need an account to browse or listen to the library.

The underlying texts. We do not claim any rights in the underlying public-domain texts or in third-party documents. Public-domain works are free for anyone to use, and we attribute institutional documents to their source and, where available, link to the original. Copyright in literary works expires at different times in different countries; we assess public-domain status principally under the law of the United States and the United Kingdom. If you access the library from another country, you are responsible for ensuring that a given work is in the public domain, or otherwise free for you to listen to, where you are.

Our audio editions. While an underlying text may be free to use, the audio edition is our own work. The narration, voice casting, chapter structure, word-level follow-along timing, cover artwork, descriptions, and the selection and arrangement of the library are created by Coiron Ltd and are protected by copyright and related rights. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to stream and listen to these audio editions through PageListener, and to share listen links for personal use. You may not download, copy, redistribute, sell, broadcast, or republish our audio editions, in whole or in part, and you may not use automated tools to scrape, harvest, or bulk-access the library or its audio. These restrictions apply to our editions only — they do not affect the underlying public-domain texts, which you remain free to obtain and use from their original sources.

Content advisories. Some works in the library — particularly older texts — contain language, depictions, or attitudes that were common in their time but are dated, offensive, or harmful by today's standards. Where we are aware of this, we may display an informational note alongside the work. Such notes are provided for context only; they are neither an endorsement of nor an objection to the content, and the works are presented as historical texts.

Reporting and takedown. We respect intellectual property and want the library to be lawful. If you are a rights holder and believe that a work in the public library, or content accessible via a listen link, infringes your copyright — or if you believe a work we have treated as public domain is not in the public domain in your jurisdiction — you may request its removal by contacting us at support@pagelistener.com with the subject line "Copyright Takedown Request". Please include the title of the work, your name and organisation, your relationship to the work, and a link to the original source if available. We will acknowledge your request within 5 business days and remove or disable access to the content promptly if your claim is valid.

We reserve the right to restore content if we believe a takedown request is mistaken, for example where the work is genuinely in the public domain or is published under an open licence.

Our responsibilities

We aim to keep the service running reliably but cannot guarantee 100% uptime. Audio quality depends on the text-to-speech technology and the quality of text extracted from your PDF. We are not responsible for inaccurate audio caused by poor PDF formatting, scanned images without text, or documents in unsupported languages.

Content and intellectual property

You retain all rights to documents you upload. We do not claim any ownership of your content. We store and process your documents solely to provide the service to you.

The PageListener name, logo, and design are the property of Coiron Ltd.

Third-party notices

Some of PageListener's audio is generated using open-source text-to-speech software. We gratefully acknowledge the Kokoro text-to-speech model, made available under the Apache License 2.0, and, for some languages, the eSpeak NG speech synthesiser. These tools are used to help produce our audio editions; the resulting audio is our own work, as described in the public audio library section above. Project names are used for attribution only and do not imply any endorsement by their authors.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Coiron Ltd is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service. Our total liability is limited to the amount you have paid us in the 12 months preceding any claim.

Document ownership and deletion

Visitor uploads. If you upload a PDF without a PageListener account, no account is linked to the document. The document remains on the platform indefinitely and may be found and listened to by other users via the cache. Visitor-uploaded documents have no owner until a registered user uploads the same PDF, at which point that user becomes the owner.

Ownership claiming. If you create an account and upload a PDF that was previously uploaded by a visitor (without an account), you automatically become the owner of that document. As the owner, you can delete it from the platform at any time.

Privacy delete. Registered users can permanently delete their owned documents from PageListener at any time, from their library. Deleting a document removes the PDF, generated audio, and extracted text from our servers. This right applies to all tiers — free and Plus. Where multiple independent users have uploaded the same document, the document is only removed from our servers when the last owner deletes it.

Impact on share recipients. If you delete a document you have shared, anyone you shared the link with will lose access. A tombstone will appear in their library indicating the document is no longer available. If another user independently uploaded the same document and also has it in their library, their copy is unaffected.

Unsharing. You can revoke access to a shared document without deleting it. Revoking access removes the document from the libraries of all users who saved it via your share link. The document remains in your own library and playable by you.

Account deletion. You can delete your PageListener account at any time through Settings. At the point of account deletion, you can choose to delete all your owned documents from the platform or leave them in place. If you choose to leave them, they become unowned and may be claimed by any registered user who uploads the same PDF in the future.

Free tier tombstones. When a free user deletes a document from the platform, the slot it occupied remains consumed (shown as a tombstone in the library) until the user upgrades to Plus. This is to prevent free users from using privacy delete as a workaround to rotate their 3-document library limit. Plus users can dismiss tombstones immediately.

Termination

You can delete your account at any time through Settings, or by contacting us. When you delete your account, your personal data (email, display name, library, listening history, and session data) is permanently removed. You choose at deletion time whether your owned documents are also deleted from the platform or left as unowned content.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms. If we terminate your account, we will tell you why unless prevented by law.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. We will update the "last updated" date at the top. Continued use of the service after changes means you accept the updated terms. For significant changes, we will notify you by email if you have an account.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Scotland. Any disputes will be subject to the jurisdiction of the Scottish courts.
