Privacy Policy

PageListener is operated by Coiron Ltd, a company registered in Scotland (SC504810). We take your privacy seriously and aim to be transparent about what we collect and why.

What we collect

Account information. When you create an account, we store your email address, a display name you choose, and a securely hashed version of your password. We never store your password in plain text.

Uploaded documents. When you upload a PDF, we extract the text to generate audio. The original PDF is stored so we can render page thumbnails. The extracted text, generated audio, and timestamps are stored so you and others with the share link can listen without re-processing.

Sensitive and confidential documents. PageListener is not a secure document vault. Uploaded documents are stored in cloud infrastructure, may be processed by an external speech provider, and may be accessible to anyone with a share link. Do not upload documents containing sensitive personal data, financial information (such as bank statements, tax returns, or payslips), medical records, legal privileged material, passwords, or other confidential information. We are not responsible for any loss or exposure resulting from your decision to upload sensitive content.

Other people's data. If you upload a document that contains personal information about other people (such as names, contact details, or financial data in meeting notes, reports, or statements), you are responsible for ensuring you have the right to share that information with a third-party service. Do not upload documents containing other people's personal data unless you have their consent or a lawful basis to do so.

Listening data. We record which documents you listen to, your playback position (so you can resume where you left off), and basic information like your browser's user agent string. This helps us improve the service and lets you pick up where you stopped.

Usage data. We collect general usage data such as pages visited and features used, so we can see where the service works well and where it does not. This is our own measurement: it uses a randomly generated session identifier stored on your device, it is not shared with anyone else, and it is not linked to advertising. You can switch it off at any time in Settings, under Privacy — the service works exactly the same either way.

Advertising measurement. We advertise PageListener on Google, and we use Google Analytics and Google Ads tags to see which adverts bring people to us. These set cookies on your device and share data with Google, which may also use it to personalise the adverts it shows you. If you are in the UK, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, they only run if you accept them — you are asked the first time you visit, and you can change your answer at any time in Settings, under Privacy. If you decline, nothing about the service changes. You can read how Google uses information from sites that use its services on Google's business data responsibility page.

How we use your data

We use your data to provide the service: generating audio from your PDFs, saving your listening progress, maintaining your library, and enabling share links. We do not sell your data to third parties. We do not use the contents of your documents for advertising, and we do not build advertising profiles or audiences from what you listen to. We do measure which of our own adverts bring people to the service, as described under Advertising measurement above. We do not train AI models on your documents.

Where your data is stored

Your account data and library are stored in a database hosted by Supabase (cloud infrastructure). Audio files and PDFs are stored in Cloudflare R2 object storage. Our application runs on Railway cloud hosting.

Text-to-speech processing. Your document's text is turned into audio either on our own servers, or by an external speech provider. Which is used depends on the language of the document and on the type of account. Where an external provider is used, the text is sent to them only to produce the audio, and only for that purpose. We do not use your documents to train speech models.

Organisations with their own agreement with us may have different arrangements, set out in that contract.

The public library

PageListener offers a public library of audio editions of public-domain and other freely available works. Library content is public material we publish for anyone to listen to — it is not your personal data. You do not need an account to browse or listen to it. If you play a library title, we record it in the same way as any other listening (which title, and your playback position so you can resume), as described above.

Share links

When you share a document link, anyone with that link can listen to the audio. They cannot access your account, library, or other documents. Share links do not expire automatically. As the document owner, you can revoke access at any time from your library — this removes the document from the libraries of all users who saved it via your link. If you delete the document from the platform, shared access is also removed. If you want a shared document removed and cannot do so yourself, contact us.

Cookies and local storage

Things we store to make the service work. We use your browser's storage to remember your session token (so you stay logged in), your appearance and language preferences, your playback position, and your answer to the cookie question below. These are needed for PageListener to work as you have asked it to, so they are always stored. Without them you would be logged out on every visit and would lose your place in every document.

Our own usage measurement. A randomly generated session identifier, described under Usage data above. It is used only to understand how the service is used, it is never shared, and you can switch it off in Settings, under Privacy.

Advertising cookies. Google Analytics and Google Ads set cookies to measure which of our adverts bring people to PageListener. If you are in the UK, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, these are only set if you accept them. We ask when you first visit, accepting and declining are equally easy, and you can change your answer at any time in Settings, under Privacy, or through the "Cookie choices" link at the bottom of the page. Your answer is stored in your browser, not on our servers, and is remembered for six months, after which we ask again.

If you are anywhere else, including the United States, these cookies are set when you visit, and you can opt out at any time through the same "Cookie choices" link or in Settings. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as an opt-out and set no advertising cookies without asking. We work out which country you are in from your internet connection. We record the country — never your city or address — with our own usage data and, if you create an account, with your account, so we can see which countries PageListener reaches; it follows the same rules as the rest of our usage data, including the switch in Settings, under Privacy.

We do not build advertising profiles ourselves, and we do not allow anyone else to advertise to you inside PageListener. Where you allow advertising cookies, Google may use them for its own advertising purposes as described on the page linked above.

Data retention

Your account data is kept for as long as you have an account. Uploaded documents and generated audio are kept indefinitely to serve share links and cached playback, unless you choose to delete them.

Deleting documents. Registered users can delete their owned documents from the platform at any time through their library. Deleting a document removes the PDF, generated audio, extracted text, and timestamps from our servers. A skeleton record (title, page count, creation date) is retained for referential integrity and to display tombstones in the libraries of other users who had access. This skeleton record contains no personal content.

Deleting your account. When you delete your account through Settings, the following is permanently removed: your email address, display name, library, listening history, sessions, voice preferences, and all associated personal data. You choose at deletion time whether your owned documents are also deleted. Your listening analytics (which documents were listened to and for how long) are retained in anonymised form — the link to your account is removed.

Activity log. We maintain a record of document-related actions in your account (uploads, deletions, shares) while your account exists. This log is used to provide you with a document history in Settings and to support your right to verify that deletions were processed. The log is deleted when you delete your account.

Terms acceptance. We record the date and time you accepted our Terms of Service when you created your account. This record is retained for legal compliance purposes.

Your rights

You can delete your owned documents from the platform at any time through your library. You can delete your account at any time through Settings — this permanently removes your personal data. You can also request a copy of your data, ask us to correct inaccurate information, or contact us to exercise any of your rights. To make any of these requests, get in touch through our contact page.

If you are in the UK or EU, you have rights under UK GDPR and EU GDPR respectively, including the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and the right to object. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) or your local supervisory authority.

If you are in the United States, you can opt out of advertising cookies as described above; opting out stops the advertising cookies and the sharing of your browsing information with Google for advertising. We do not sell your personal information. Residents of states with their own privacy laws can exercise the rights those laws give them, such as access, deletion and opting out, by contacting us as described above.

Children and young people

Under 13. PageListener is not directed at children under 13, and you must be at least 13 to create an account. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us and we will delete it and the personal data associated with it.

Under 18. PageListener is used by school and university students, and our public library includes audio editions of works that appear on school reading lists. If you are under 18, you need permission from a parent or guardian to use PageListener, and you must have their permission before starting a paid subscription. We ask for the same information from younger users as from anyone else — an email address, a display name, and your listening activity — and we use it only to run the service, as described above. We do not use it for advertising, we do not sell it, and we do not profile users or build advertising audiences.

Listening without an account. You can listen to the public library and to shared links without creating an account, and without giving us an email address or any other personal detail. Where you listen this way, we record the listening itself (which title, and for how long) but it is not linked to a named person. Creating an account — free or paid — does require an email address, because it is how we identify you, let you log back in, and restore your library and playback position across devices.

Parents and guardians. If you are a parent or guardian and want to see what data we hold about your child's account, have it corrected, or have the account and its data deleted, get in touch through our contact page and we will action it. If a subscription has been started on your card without your agreement, contact us and we will cancel it and refund the current billing period.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will update the "last updated" date at the top. Continued use of the service after changes means you accept the updated policy.
