A Speechify alternative, if you only wanted to listen to your own PDFs
You have things to get through — a handbook, a stack of papers, a book you keep not finishing — and not enough hours sitting still to read them. So you went looking for something that would read them to you, found Speechify, and got as far as the price.

What Speechify does, and what it costs
Speechify is a good product. It reads almost anything — web pages, emails, printed books through your phone's camera — in more than sixty languages. It has AI summaries, podcasts, an assistant, voice typing, over two hundred voices, playback up to five times speed, and offline downloads. It was built by a founder with dyslexia and it has real accessibility credentials. If you want one tool that covers your whole reading day, it is genuinely one of the best.
It is also £129.99 for a year, paid up front, after a three-day trial. That is the price shown in their iPhone app. Their website lists $139 a year, or $29 a month.
The smallest thing you can commit to
| Speechify | PageListener | |
|---|---|---|
| Smallest commitment | £129.99 — a year, up front | £2.99 — a month |
| Twelve months (UK) | £129.99 | £35.88 |
| Twelve months (US) | $139 | $35.88 |
| Monthly option | $29 a month, on their site | £2.99 / $2.99 |
Prices checked 31 August 2026. The annual sterling figure is from Speechify's iPhone app; the dollar figures are from their website. App-store and web prices differ.
The row that matters most is the first one. What you risk to find out whether a listening tool suits you is a year on one side and a month on the other — and an annual plan does not refund the unused part if you stop in March.
Why the difference is this large
It is not generosity. The two products are built differently, and the prices follow from that.
Speechify meters premium-voice words. Their published guarantee is a minimum of 150,000 a month, currently raised to a million for 2026. The metering applies only to the premium voices; the free ones are not counted.
In pages, that is roughly 500 a month on the guaranteed floor and about 3,500 on this year's raised allowance — measured against our own documents, which run to a median of 288 words a page. Most people will never reach the higher figure. But the floor is the number you are contractually owed, and one long handbook can be most of it.
Their free tier is not word-capped at all. It is the free voices — Speechify's own pricing page calls them robotic sounding — at up to 1.5× speed. We listened to one on a real free account in August 2026, and their description is fair. If those had been good enough, you would not be reading this page.
We cannot see how Speechify is built, so treat what follows as reasoning rather than fact. But you only need to count words if producing the audio costs you something each time someone listens.
PageListener makes the audio once, and it stays in your library ready to play. Listening again costs us nothing, so we do not count it. Nothing is re-made and nothing is re-charged. Play the same 500-page document ten times and it costs the same as playing it once — where metering by the word, ten plays is ten times the words. That matters more than it sounds, because people re-listen to the things they are actually trying to learn.
The trade goes both ways, whichever way they do it. Producing audio on demand would mean no waiting before you can start — and Speechify does start playing immediately. Making the audio up front means a short wait while your document is prepared, and the voice is fixed once it is made. That is the right trade for a two-hundred-page handbook you will come back to, and the wrong one for skimming an article over coffee.
What you give up
Before you spend anything:
- No offline downloads. You need a connection to listen.
- PDFs only. No web pages, no email, no camera scanning of printed books.
- The PDF needs real text. A scanned or photographed page has none, so it will not work.
- Fewer voices and languages, and playback up to 1.5×, not 5×.
- No AI summaries, podcasts or assistant. We read the document. That is the whole product.
Choose Speechify if you want your whole reading day covered, need to scan printed books, listen at high speed, or rely on text-to-speech as an accessibility tool — they are properly set up for that, including Access to Work and DSA in the UK.
What you get instead
Upload a PDF and it comes back as an audiobook. Chapters are worked out automatically, so a long document is something you can navigate rather than one endless track. It plays with your screen off and your phone in your pocket. It remembers exactly where you stopped, on every device you use. The original page is a tap away, and a follow-along view shows the text as it is spoken.
If it is a professional qualification you are working through, we measured how many hours a handbook actually comes to against our own documents. The answer is usually larger than people expect.
There is also a public library of classic books, included in your subscription rather than sold as a separate unlock, and open to browse without an account.
What it costs. An hour of listening a month is free — your own documents and library titles alike. After that it is £2.99 a month, or $2.99, for as much as you want, and you can cancel any time.
PageListener is also listed on AlternativeTo, the independent directory of software alternatives, where you can see how it compares with other reading apps.
Try it on something you actually need to read
Upload the document you were looking for a reader for in the first place. Playback starts within seconds, before the rest of the document is ready, and you will know inside five minutes whether listening works for you — for a month's commitment rather than a year's.
A free account takes a moment, and your first document goes through whatever its length.
PageListener is not affiliated with Speechify. Everything above was checked against Speechify's own published pricing and terms on 31 August 2026; their prices and features change, so check theirs before deciding.
